The Twin Commander University will add to its rich, three-decades-long tradition when it convenes April 23-25 in Savannah, Georgia, a city with its own proud history. This, the 12th biennial University, continues the tradition of providing Twin Commander owners and operators from around the world with a fun and informative weekend of seminars and social events.
Here’s a look at some of the activities and seminar sessions planned for the 2015 University:
Wednesday, April 22
- Fly to Savannah/Hilton Head International (KSAV) and park at Sheltair. (For more information about flying to KSAV see below.)
- Check in at the University hotel, the Savannah Hilton DeSoto, in the heart of the city’s beautiful and historic residential area just a few short blocks from vibrant riverfront shopping and dining. (To reserve your room, see below.)
- Wednesday evening enjoy dinner at the Pink House or another of Savannah’s many memorable, eclectic restaurants, then take a stroll through the 250-year-old riverfront district.
Thursday, April 23
- Erik Eliel presents his renowned Airborne Weather Radar class or, optionally, compete in the traditional Club Benders Scramble at the highly rated Club at Savannah Harbor’s 18-hole PGA Tour Championship course.
- At 6:00 p.m. gather in the DeSoto’s 15th floor Harborview room for a gala Welcome Reception, a panoramic view of the city, and the congenial company of old friends and new.
Friday & Saturday, April 24-25
- Breakfast in the exhibit hall, view product and service displays, and talk to representatives from Twin Commander partner companies including authorized service centers, SimCom’s Twin Commander Training Center, and others.
- Erik Eliel on why “It’s Better to be Good Than Lucky.”
- Twin Commander Aircraft engineering staff update on the latest service, modification, and upgrade initiatives from the factory.
- A panel of experienced Twin Commander instructors and pilots discuss why it is vital to “Know Your Airplane, Know Yourself.”
- SimCom Training Center instructors offer their insight on what it takes to be a proficient Twin Commander pilot.
- Veteran Twin Commander instructor and mentor pilot Hugh Davis reveals his best tips and techniques.
- A look at the current aircraft insurance market from NationAir’s Dale Barnard.
- Cockpit familiarization class for your right-seat companion, presented by SimCom.
- Friday evening reception and riverboat cruise down the Savannah River to historic Ft. Jackson, where we disembark for a traditional Southern lowcountry boil dinner. Transportation back to the hotel via trolleys.
- Helmuth Eggeling, Honeywell’s longtime pilot advisor, presents his renowned TPE331 engine operating tips for pilots program.
- Paul Buza, founder and Medical Director of Southern AeroMedical Institute (SAMI) and author of “Scenario Based Physiology” on the dangers of the slow onset of hypoxia.
- Louis Meiners Jr. of Advocate Aircraft on how to avoid triggering an IRS exam with airplane expenses.
- A panel of factory and service center members answer the question, “What does the future hold for my Twin Commander?”
- Thierry Pouille, founder of Air Journey, on adventure travel opportunities in your Twin Commander
Flying to Ksav
Sheltair is the recommended FBO at KSAV (www.sheltairaviation.com/fbos/savannah). General Manager Gary Gutkowski ([email protected]) says University attendees should call the FBO at 912-965-0095 and advise Customer Service Supervisor Marlena or Customer Service Representatives Cynthia, Deana or Adrian of your arrival/departure times as well as any other requests.
Sheltair’s normal hours of operation are 0600-2200 seven days a week, but FBO personnel will be available for known earlier/later arrivals and departures.
Hertz vehicles are available on-site for those who wish to rent a car. Taxi fare for the approximate 20-minute drive to or from the DeSoto is $28 plus $5 for each additional rider.
University fly-in attendees will receive a $ 1.00 per gallon discount off the retail price of fuel, with no minimum purchase required. No handling fees will be charged.
Overnight parking for a Twin Commander at Sheltair, normally $55 per night, will be reduced to $40 per night for attendees. Hangar space, if available, is very limited and will be charged at $85 per night instead of the normal $135.
